If you're in the entertainment staff you're better off for a variety of reasons (and most cruise staff influencers are either in entertainment or shop staff who don't actually work for the cruise line), but for most staff you have a 6-12 month contract where you're working 7 days a week up to 12 hours a day for around $1,000 a month (some positions also get tipped). But it does include room and board, although the room is a tiny room shared with another staff member with bunk beds and no window in most cases. If you're an officer or in leadership, though, you often can get a room with a porthole by yourself, especially if you're experienced. The captain's quarters are generally very big.
Most captains don't have a cat, though.

I think they're especially superstitious because the Godmother of the Costa Concordia didn't break the bottle when she did it by hand (Eva Herzigova) and we know what happened there. It's bad luck to not break the bottle.

They're even supposed to get special bottles specifically for the process LOL, but cruise ships are so big, you don't break the bottle directly, you release it from a distance on a rope and it swings to hit the ship. But as I said, most of the time now it's hanging from a cherry picker or crane and someone inside the terminal where the party is presses a button and then someone releases the bottle and it swings from a long distance to hit the ship. And as I said, special breakable bottles.
