I grew up in a household with no religion so I can't fully understand and relate, but I know that leaving the Mormon church is very difficult, even just socially. It's awesome and special that his mom came around like that
agreed, its VERY hard to leave because of the social aspect! it's the entire community and when you suddenly can't attend the majority of events everyone else, you need to build a brand new life almost. its how they keep members in, I feel.
I grew up in a secular house (a lot like the protagonist in are you there god, it's me Margaret), but I still feel like I've suffered from religious trauma. I went to a public elementary school that was primarily Catholic, so by the third grade I'd heard a lot of homophobic shit. the first slur I was called was the f slur, and my smart ass told him he should use the d-slur (I didn't censor it tho oop)
like, even secular you're still surrounded by religious people who are very keen to share their dogma with the heathens
Tbh secular doesn't mean no homophobia. Many Asian countries like Viet Nam, China or Japan are pretty much secular but still manage to be homophobic without religious influences.
i just can't fathom telling the person in front of me, real, tangible, that i love an entity i have no proof of more than them. it's SICK! how do people not see how sick it is? i don't get it. religion is a mental illness.
i'm glad she came to her senses but this hurt my heart to read.
