It is so typical of women generally that we can recognise we were in inappropriate relationships but still blame ourselves for it. He was THIRTY, Megan. you were just out of childhood. It wasn’t your fault you were “not a great girlfriend”.

Agreed. It's great that she can recognize it was a poor choice on her part, which she owns some of that, but he had already been working 15+ years, had been engaged and had a kid. Deciding to get involved with a 19-year-old? Oh boy.

I understand how we can follow our parents’ footsteps without even trying. I’m going back to college this year to finally finish my bachelors. I was going through some of my dad’s old things (he passed in 2013) and realized he was also 36 years old when he went back to finish his. And we were both derailed from finishing it when we were younger due to alcoholism and massive anxiety. I quit alcohol four years ago so I’m attempting to break the cycle because my dads side of the family was nearly all alcoholics.

i can understand that "taking responsibility" feels good because it makes you feel more in control of the situation, and even shitty situations somehow feel better when you think you chose them. its also a response to being gaslit a lot. its not voluntary and it isnt as easy as just "stopping". i get what you're saying but it isn't really her fault.
