Cetaphil, Taylor Swift, and Controversy ("I Swear I Don't Love the Drama, It Loves Me")

Taylor Swift couldn't avoid controversy if she tried.

Cetaphil stole this idea from my tiktoks with my step-dad but OK! https://t.co/as9rRa2eA6

I just realized I didn't summarize anything... Essentially, Sharon (who is black) had real, non-staged bonding moments with her step-dad (who is white) surrounding Taylor Swift and football. In the commercial, the father (who is white) and the daughter (who is mixed/black) also do this. In the commercial, Swift and the Chiefs are never mentioned, but the jerseys are red and the father can be seen wearing friendship bracelets.

Yeah, the criticism is warranted. The commercial is way too long and drab for what it is though. Sharon's tiktoks are so much better considering it's candid. That last one where they're they doing eyemasks and her dad is catching her up on the Taylor Swift/football gossip mill is adorable.

I also don't understand how the face lotion fits into the story. It really looks as if they liked the tiktoks so much and needed to jump on the TSwift/football bandwagon somehow, that they stole it and then randomly slapped "and here's our product that has absolutely nothing to do with it" on it.

There's like a 3 second scene when the commercial dad smears Cetaphil under his eyes and leaves her room, the rest is all melodramatic filler, lmao. The tone is so weirdly depressing; was there an extra few seconds that got cut where we learn the mom just died and dad doesn't know how to connect with the daughter? What a terrible commercial, lol.

Yeah, also why is she sitting down multiple times an afternoon to moisturize her face? Is the lotion so useless? 🤔 That scene when he comes in & smears it under his eyes rather feels like he's mocking her skincare routine tbh...

The tiktok is cute the commercial is annoying with the dramatic song. That being said yeah they probably saw the tiktok and thought the concept but yeah that's not exactly stealing a idea but get money i guess

This reminds me a lot of the Black Mirror episode Joan Is Awful. At what point are our real life moments that we capture on Instagram, Tik Tok, or Twitter copyrightable? If this was a scripted Tik Tok series by Sharon, i think she would have a case for suing Cetaphil, but because it's a candid moment she captured, legally it's perfectly acceptable for them to copy it. It's fucked up and it keeps happening to black creators.

Yeah, wasn't there a girl who became Tik Tok famous for dancing, but she was copying choreographies from black creators??

Can't remember her name.
