In the Original Screenplay category, Oscar frontrunner and Golden Globe winner Anatomy of a Fall will not be able to nab a nomination. Neither will The Boy and The Heron, A Thousand and One, or Fallen Leaves. But Barbie will, as the guild has placed it in this category, unlike the Academy. So, too, has Origin, despite being based on and inspired by the book Caste.

honestly went to the source to read this for myself. How is Heron not original, bc it's based off of Miyazaki's life?

I think it (like a lot of the other international films in contention) got disqualified due to it not being produced under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement, not because it wasn’t original.

Ah, okay, well that's their business I guess.

It makes sense, since it’s an award show that recognizes the guild’s best work.

How is Barbie more original than Anatomy of a Fall?!

They usually pulled from previous material including the clothes and dream houses.

It seems like too strict of a rule if so many good screenplays that will be in contention at the Oscars got disqualified but I don’t know their reasoning

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaameeeeeeee!!

Seems like a dumb rule if you’re gonna invite foreign films into consideration 🙄

how exactly would a screenplay written by a foreign writer and produced internationally be under an america guild's standards? this seems like the dumbest reason to disqualify screenplays

i did a quick google and Parasite won for best Original Screenplay so how the hell did that happen lmfaooo

Origin, despite being based on and inspired by the book Caste.

Origin is about the author's process writing the book, not a straightforward adaptation of the book itself so this is a little off

Why are people surprised? This is their own awards show to honor work that guild members have produced. I wouldn’t expect them to allow scripts produced outside their contract.

Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won are WGA members. Of course they’d be eligible.

Yeah, I don't get the point of being upset that a guild isn't honoring non-members or something outside their agreements. Sorry? lmao there's nothing wrong with that.
