Went to a screening of Paris, Texas last night.

It's a beautiful looking film, and I liked it as a whole, but I feel like maybe I had more issues with it than most. The structure was interesting, and that scene at the end was fantastic, but I had a hard time with Travis as a character. [Spoiler (click to open)]Like, his solution at the end, after genuinely bonding with the kid he ditched with his brother, was to ditch his kid again? Goddamn! And I can see wanting to reunite the kid with Jane, but I really felt for his brother and Anne. And Harry Dean Stanton looks like my grandpa in this movie, which was a little distracting, as were the assholes behind us who kept talking throughout the movie.

Going to see I.S.S. tomorrow and Mean Girls on Saturday... low expectations for both, but we'll see!

I very much felt the same way after seeing Paris, Texas. [spoilers]The film is so empathetic towards Travis, and I felt very much on board with that until the final confrontation with Jane in which it's revealed that he was profoundly abusive to this teenage girl who had to flee him in the dead of night with their baby. After that, it was hard for me to see him as anything less than a monster, and it totally recontextualized his absence from Hunter's life and the way he treats his brother and Anne. I was so angry and disgusted that I no longer cared about his attempt at making things right or achieving some level of redemption... )

Wow, you really articulated exactly what I was thinking approximately 1000x better than I did, and then expounded on it, so thank you for that! Beautifully put. I talked about it with my husband afterward, and while he understood my criticisms, he definitely wasn't as critical of Travis as I was, and I think that kind of tracks with what you're saying.

Thank you! I'm always eager to talk with other smart film fans about this movie, because I feel so out of step with the consensus. My husband was also a lot warmer on it than I was.

I'm going to see The Holdovers this weekend! It's finally released here. Next week, I'm going to watch a movie - Here - that I'm not familiar with but my friend said is good.

I finally saw Poor Things this past weekend and I loved it! I never thought I'd become quite so familiar with Emma Stone's tits though lol

I just found out about the Dune (2021) IMAX reissue next week, so I am rearranging my life to be there. It's stupid how excited I am.

Haha, yeah, it got to the point where I barely noticed the nudity, which is how you know there's a lot of nudity.

Have fun at Dune!!
