From the fight training scenes and photos that Amber's posted, it's pretty obvious that Mera was supposed to get possessed by the trident and fight both Arthur and Orm at the very least.

I'm glad he's calling them out and supporting Amber. Amber was a huge part of the charm of the first movie and it was wildly stupid to reduce her role.
