It's not simple though, not in British culture. I've seen very different opinions of the film from UK and US audiences, and I don't think that's a surprise. There's a lot of nuance to it that I think would fly over the heads of people who aren't entrenched in this class system.

I don't think it's about greed though, it's about status. The rich family in Saltburn are the upper eschelon of society - old money. They almost transcend that class system. Oliver wanted the house, yes, but it's more about how he's seen by others. Not about the money. Perhaps he was 'greedy' for that status but that's how my friends and I interpreted it.

yeah, it wasn't scandalous, in fact, it was pretty boring. The plot was predictable and familiar, like I had seen or read similar stories before.
I also didn't get the character or his obsession with saltburn. He could chill out with everyone still in his presence, they all loved him.
I agree about Jacob, he was very cute, especially with wings.

i thought they would go deeper into his obsession with Felix. It would be way more interesting than what they deliver. Instead, we've got a tiresome story about a crazy person.

I've read none of this is true by Lisa Jewell, it has a similar plot but better execution

[Spoiler (click to open)]I think they would’ve eventually kicked him out like they did Pamela. The implication is that Felix has a habit of becoming friends with lower class friends and eventually invites them to Saltburn for the summer and then eventually gets bored and kinda dumps them. His mom seems to do similar, which we can see with Pamela... )

The difference between Oliver and Pamela is that Pamela had nothing, while Oliver had an education, money, and a loving family. Nothing would've changed if they kicked him out.
My main problem with the movie is that it started with Oliver's obsession with Felix and then turned into his obsession with Saltburn. Why? They didn't explain it.
Why did he choose him specifically? What is it about the building? We'll never know.

I guess he got singled out cause he was the most popular boy at Oxford and Felix pretty much represents everything Oliver wants. Felix's fatal error was that Saltburn invitation cause clearly Oliver started setting the plans in motion.

But yeah I wish the script would've been better laid out.

It didn't quite go into the extremes like I thought it would.
