On the one hand, I'm glad SYTYCD is coming back because I like the show and its showcase of dance talent. On the other hand, I genuinely don't know what to think of the changes. At first blush, it sounds like maybe it will be less about dance and more about the contestants? Was the original format losing popularity?
That's a good point about the partnered aspect! I'm not at all familiar with Step It Up and Dance but it's good to hear it had a realistic approach. And I don't mind some behind-the-scenes stuff, either, as long as we still see lots of dance. I'm not a dancer but I love watching dance and SYTYCD was an accessible way to see different styles. You make me feel more optimistic about the changes!
You might be able to still find Step It Up and Dance on YouTube! The basic format was that the ten contestants learned a routine each week. There were a few that I still remember even though this show aired a million years ago. They learned a routine from the cofounder of Stomp. They learned a really fast paced and very long Broadway routine from a production of Damn Yankees that Jason Alexander was involved in (I still remember one of the dancers telling the camera that it was 25 8-counts). And the week that I would have diiiiiiiiiied was when Tina Landon taught them choreography from Rihanna’s Umbrella video.
It's been forever and a day since I watched this show and I don't know what to think of the format change but hell, I remember Comfort (and Allison, of course), so maybe I'll try to remember to check this season out.
Another format change will be a more documentary/reality tv look at the dancers’ personal lives which includes “behind-the-scenes dynamics” and the cast’s “daily struggles, new relationships, personality clashes and more.”
i'll pass. i don't need another reality show with manufactured drama.
okay let me posi and share my two fave dances.
let's ignore what resin murphy said and enjoy the choreo
As competitive and cut-throat as the dance world is, I doubt they'll need to manufacture much drama when it's already there, though this show has historically done a good job of making it all look like a love fest. More changes mean they really don't know what to do with this show, again, but ex-dancer that I am means I'll give it a watch to see where it's going from here. Lythgoe back as a judge is a choice though. Maybe he's had some sensitivity training and finally stepped (shuffle-ball-changed) into the 21st century.
