Saw it in theaters and loved it even though it was so depressing

Hopefully this isn't too spoilery but I definitely interpreted Elizabeth as a jab at actors who go OTT to be "method" and do completely unnecessary (and even harmful) things in the name of preparing for a role. And it made me laugh that they got Natalie Portman for the role since she basically won an Oscar by convincing everyone she became a full fledged ballerina to prepare for Black Swan.

Yeah personally that's how I took it. Like she said something earlier in the movie about getting to see what it was like to sneak around with him, just oblivious to how that comment was going to make him feel. So I thought them sleeping together was her taking "getting into character" to the extreme.

He said he’d go get a towel but she grabbed another towel that she had nearby, like she expected it to happen, and planned ahead. Then she tried to glance at the letter but didn’t have enough time.
