The way musical theater tik tok is melting over this casting. And I agree with them, Sweeny should be a baritone. But I'm curious to see how a tenor would sound in this role. Too bad I missed seeing Josh Groban in it 😪
The Broadway subreddit is losing their minds over this casting, but I think Sutton and Aaron will do a good job. Sutton and Annaleigh are similar actors imo and this revival in particular leans pretty heavily into Mrs. Lovett's comedic side, so I think Sutton is a perfect match since she's so vaudevillian-esque.
As for Aaron, I understand the gripes about a tenor being cast in a traditionally baritone role, but acting-wise I think Aaron has it in him to deliver a suitably sinister, unhinged performance based on his turn in Assassins. I saw people saying Aaron's too much of a young pretty boy to play Sweeney, but first of all he's literally 40 and only 2 years younger than Josh Groban, and second of all it's stated repeatedly that Benjamin Barker used to be more like Anthony prior to the Turpin incident, so I think Aaron's reputation as this male ingenue will add to the tragedy of the character because it'll make the parallels with Anthony more overt. So I'm looking forward to this.
The recent production with Simone Kleinsma at the DeLamar theatre? I saw one of the first performances and the sound mixing was absolutely atrocious. I could barely understand the lyrics and some songs genuinely hurt to listen to.
There was another, much smaller production at Het Zonnehuis in Amsterdam a few years ago and that one was way better.
