This may be a dumb question but as someone that hardly likes alcohol (not even wine) and only a light Mojito here and there, do alcoholics truly LOVE the taste of alcohol eventually like „omg this pure vodka tastes amazing, just like ice tea) or is it more like „ugh I hate drinking it, it’s disgusting in my mouth“ but the body craving it is stronger. I just can’t imagine it tasting good, just like cigarettes (the passive smell it leaves on one’s clothes is already enough for me to not even try) like does a cigarette taste like sweets to chain smokers?? or again a matter of „my body NEEDS it but I actually hate the taste“
I haaaaate the taste of alcohol, but would chug it down just to get to the relaxed, take the edge off life feeling. Alcohol is gross, but it was the only way I felt like I could breathe/handle life so it felt like it was worth it. Which of course it wasn’t.
I think eventually they acquire the taste for it. But the cravings are much more mental & physical than it is for the actual taste. The ends justify their means.
i’m a fairly casual drinker meaning that i can have 2-3 drinks a week but i can also go weeks without drinking. i love going out but i strictly limit myself to about 3 drinks at most (2 if i’m driving myself) when i’m out.
i LOVE cocktails. i love how they taste when made well. i don’t like red wine at all but i love a lot of sparkling wines like cava, prosecco, champagne, rose. i also enjoy beer too.
then i like drinks that mix all of the above like spritzes (prosecco + aperol) and micheladas (mexican beer + spices and sometimes clamato).
i know this next bit will make me sound like a snob or boujee but i will caveat all this by saying when i drink, it’s often top shelf stuff at establishments that are charging about $20/drink made by bartenders that know what they’re doing.
i found your question really interesting and also all the responses you’ve gotten. i decided to comment bc it didn’t look like you’d had responses by casual drinkers yet.
talk em up babe! i'm a little out of the loop on the bar scene and been mostly doing upscale restos (like barley swine, nice steak houses, suerte, etc) for the last couple of years, so i would love to hear what you're into. i know drinkwell is there and it's on my list of places to hit up. it's not on north loop but i've also been meaning to go to nickel city.
Yesss! Drinkwell sounds exactly like what you’re talking about. They have a nice liquor list and are always doing seasonal drink menus. It’s smaller but never seems to get too loud.
Tigress is another cocktail bar that isn’t as nice as drinkwell but it’s very austin feeling. Same as drinkwell, they always have a seasonal menu. I feel like they’re only open wednesday - sunday.
Then workhorse. Not bougie at all BUT they have excellent handmade cocktails. They do a hand-made margarita with fresh squeezed limes and house made triple sec for 6 bucks. Their food is delicious too.
These are just all convenient and chill bars with plenty of neighborhood parking!
I’m sure you have because it sounds up your alley but you’ve been to odd duck & and sour duck right? They have some amazing cocktails.
Those were my faves when I was in Austin too and it makes me wonder if I was eating a homemade twinkie at drink.well next to a young zibby at some point in the past decade 😂
Bahaha drinkwell is where you would’ve seen me going that far back. But barflys was my REAL haunt back in the day. How I never wiped out on those stairs is a wonder.
Then we definitely have been drunk in the same place lmao. If I hit the $10 credit card minimum at ANY of Marcos's bars, I was in trouble the next day. Can't even count how many dick pics I got sent from texting numbers carved into the Barfly's picnic tables hahahaha
Oh my god I just remembered the time a guy got banned from all of that family of bars because he went to Hideout, put $20 in the jukebox, and played a fucking Alkaline Trio album 3 times in a row.
I think it also depends on the alcohol. Some of them (like some scotches, high end gins, and tequilas and absinthes) have really nuanced flavors that people like. My partner doesn't drink anymore for heath reasons but still enjoys the taste, so we find non-alcohol options; there are some that taste really boozy but they aren't. I drink, and I actually enjoy the taste of certain alcohols and beers. So I guess the answer to your question depends on the person?
I don’t have a substance problem with alcohol but I only started drinking later in life so you may find my experience interesting . Like many with many foods with a more complex taste, alcohol can be an acquired taste. There are things that you grow to like and things you never will like with anything else but if you go into it with quality stuff and give yourself time you expand your palate in the process you will most likely find stuff you like. Of course, one must be aware that drinking is never a healthy habit, even for those who can do it moderately. I went about it the way I did cause I didn’t trust myself as there are a lot of people with substance abuse problems in my family. I must say though, by doing this I never grew to like stuff that straight up tastes like alcohol like vodka, for an example. For me, the taste has to be interesting and I never drink without food. This really helps your mind to align alcohol with a sensory experience but not with getting full on drunk.
Hmm. I like wine and beer, but I wouldn’t drink non-alcoholic wine or beer. If I’m drinking hard liquor, it’s usually to get drunk and not something I particularly enjoy. But some alcoholic drinks do taste good.

I know we used to frequent the same dog park so the location should be good for you. If you don’t go to them, let me talk them up for you!
