add to that list stephen jimenez, the "journalist" responsible for the 20/20 segment in 2004 that gave credence to the conspiracy theory that shepard was a drug dealer/that a drug deal gone wrong lead to his murder *and* had the audacity to publish a book in 2013 further perpetuating it. we have him largely to thank for comments like these:
These seem like the people that would bend over backwards to protect their daughter Khrystall who's runnin an oxy business on the side for accidentally burning their trailer to the ground while cooking baked beans for the child she had with her first cousin, but will act like this if it helps them feel better about how bad they failed to use their earthly time.
this was such an upsetting story when it happened and it still is. I was 16 when this happened, bi, with a gay mom, and it shook me to my core that such cruelty existed. His mom has been a warrior for the cause, though, in that heartbreaking way so many mothers of murdered kids have to become.
I was a bisexual 16-year-old as well and this was so traumatizing. He had his whole life ahead of him. The shit us queer kids had to watch and experience in the 80s and 90s (and of course before that)...I see it returning and it horrifies me.
I wasn't aware of the story in my country, but all guilty parties were arrested and convicted? how long in prison? (expecting to be disappointed by the verdict...)
I looked up the murderers last night. As of 2021, they were both still in prison and might be for life. They were in their early 20s so I’m imagining 21-23. I cannot remember the actual coverage it received at the time. I did a research paper in high school and Matthew was a large part of it. I think that’s where I really became familiar with it.
The part that stayed with me when reading the nature of his murder [Spoiler (click to open)] was that his whole face was bloodied except for 2 lines on his face which were caused by his tears ;-; I added the cut since it's sad.

it was just horrifying to hear it, and I hate that it's the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this post.

His murderers were so young too & I’m afraid of how radicalized some kids are now becoming.
