Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis wrote letters in support of Danny Masterson, who ended up being sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women.
Ashton reportedly called him a ‘role model’ while Mila commented on his ‘exceptional character.’

This makes me feel differently about both of them. I mean, I get it; I had a friend who was murdered by her partner who was also a good friend of mine. It completely was unexpected and it took me a long time to reconcile the fact that someone who was really good to me at a time in my life that was extremely horrible and stressful was capable of even doing such a thing. You care for that person, but after a certain point you can't ignore that they did a horrible thing. They read the victim's statements. They know what happened. They just don't care.

If you've been friends with someone forever, and they've supported you through things, this relationship is often not a switch you can easily turn off. I understand why it may not have sunk in or they feel like they can't turn their back on a friend. I want to say I would never be friends with someone who does this, but I think relationships are complicated. We don't want to believe bad things about those we love. That said, there is a world of difference between having those complicated, ambivalent personal feelings, and submitting a letter to the court to ask for leniency! THAT, I would never, ever do, especially not after hearing all the absolutely awful things he did. The friend is going to have to ride out the punishment. As far as I can tell, Masterson also never acknowledged any wrongdoing so he doesn't deserve leniency.

I honestly don't blame people who were friends with horrible people for not being able to speak out against them. It can be so impossible to understand that someone who means so much to you is capable of so much cruelty. It's almost like a death too, you knew your friend in one way and then you find out they weren't that person.
But I can never forgive people who find out their friend/family did horrible things and actively support them/try to victim blame.

But he did it. I can say i never expected it and i can say i have such a hard time reconciling someone i thought i knew could do such a thing but i will also never defend him or try to minimize the impact of the choices he made. Ill never judge someone, even a celebrity, for not making a statement in a situation like this... but ill sure as fuck judge them for asking for leniency and trying to say hes a good guy!

Wow. Fuck them, Kitty & Red, and also Giovanni Ribisi.
I get it's hard for a trusted friend to turn out to be a monster, but when you continue to support them to this degree, you're just as monstrous. Rape convictions are hard to come by and he got 30 years for his crimes. He did it. He's not a "role model" nor does he have "exceptional character."

As I wrote above, there is a world of difference between having complicated, ambivalent personal feelings about someone's guilt or your relationship with them, and submitting a letter of support to the court to ask for leniency! Even if someone's a friend, if he did absolutely awful, he needs to deal with the consequences. The worst is, Masterson also never acknowledged any wrongdoing so he doesn't deserve leniency.

I'm shocked Laura hasn't written any letters yet, but maybe she's being smart and staying quiet on this one.

didn't she sorta-kinda claim she was out of it or did I imagine that? I felt like she tried to distance herself from Scientology during the height of OITNB

Hot tip for celebrities and like... everyone: Just because a lawyer asks you to write a letter for a friend/former co-worker's sentencing in a rape conviction trial, doesn't mean you have to say yes!

I legit cannot imagine anyone in my life even having the guts to ask me for something like this.
