Harry is] “white and he’s straight. That’s why he’s on the cover. Non-binary blah blah blah blah. No. It doesn’t feel good to me. You’re using my community - or your people are using my community - to elevate you. You haven’t had to sacrifice anything.”

Real loser behaviour. You don’t own gender non conformity you weirdo. Also, is this not him?

I remember that happening and not liking him. He's a lot. I remember having to quit a podcast interview with him because he sounded coked out, he was going 100 mph

look, im sick of anna wintour too being the editor of vogue too, but i fucking hate gay men who think it's okay to use the word bitch towards women cause apparently gay excuses the sexism.

"Non-binary blah blah blah blah." ..... literally... that has nothing to do with harry styles and says more about you, billy, than anyone else.

i do think harry styles benefited off the grey area of the community to help his solo career tbh but i feel like that was an unpopular opinion around here :l

I'm pretty sure it's not unpopular around here. I see it in comments on his post all the time. Now if we were talking the general public, then yeah. It's not really talked about that much.

Calling Anna “that bitch” in an interview is objectively wild. Especially for someone who’s been so tied to the fashion world in the past. It’s been obvious for a little while he’s had a falling out with the fashion world though.

He keeps flip flopping on this (and talking about it 2+ years later) and while his point might be right in some capacity he’s doing it for bitter self serving reasons and doesn’t actually care about others. Also he keeps saying questionable things when making points.

And so what if he's bitter? He's an elder gay man who survived the AIDS epidemic he deserves his flowers.

Fr, the way people are acting up about a gay Black man's opinion about a boring straight white guy and a boring straight white woman. I dislike the way he calls her a bitch but he's not wrong.

Yeah his misogyny and dismissal of enby aren't great but everyone is purposefully missing his point. It seems in actuality, gender non-conformity was really about expanding the territory for cishet men. Most of it was making sure that everyone knew that men could wear flowers and nail polish without being gay. Meanwhile, actual Queer people were overlooked and still marginalized.

It's been 3 years Billy.

I feel crazy when I say this but I never get why people get mad at Harry Styles for wearing dresses or sequins or stuff.

Is this a generational thing? IDK I see people mad because they assume he's straight but as a child of the '90s I always assumed straight men wearing sequins and dresses and skirts was the future we would get since women got to wear pants. I went to an arts high school in the early 2000s and plenty of straight guys would just show up in skirts or dresses.

Yeah, I don't get the backlash against Harry for this thing in particular. I understand being peeved that he's seen as a pioneer or symbol of a movement, but that's really not on him.

It's just so weird to me that people push back on (presumably) straight dudes for being gnc. Like if you're pro de-gendering fashion, why should a man need to be queer to wear traditionally feminine clothing?

Fully agreed.

This is probably (definitely) me being ignorant on some of these issues, but I just… find it weird that clothing is still so tied to gender. I get that someone's choice of clothing can be a big part of their gender identity, but I also don't think that it needs to be. Which I say as a straight woman who has never liked wearing very typical feminine clothing (and literally wore a purse for the first time at the age of like 23), but also never questioned my gender identity. I realize dressing less "feminine" is very much easier for a woman than dressing in dresses and skirts is for a man, but I don't think this whole "you shouldn't wear this if you identify as cis/straight" thing is helping. And I'm sure it's more nuanced and complex than that, but yeah.

I understand the reaction people have when he's hailed as this champion of gender non-conformity or whatever - but he has never claimed to be that, other people have put that on him. Harry has always just said that he likes to have fun with clothes, I feel like?

It feels like part of another thing that gets me sometimes - a lot of people aren't trying to destroy gender roles and forced performance of gender, they're just trying to put themselves into a box they like better. Like, because Harry is largely assumed to be cishet, he shouldn't be out and about wearing dresses, that's only for people in this other rigidly defined box.
