From what I've read and seen of divergent it's amazing people felt that strongly about Tris. Being the special chosen brown haired girl is a hell of a thing.
I don’t remember Divergent being big enough to have this kind of reaction or even be kind of a competition for The Hunger Games. They never even finished the series. Who went that hard for Tris?
They never pitted Bella against Hermione, but Twilight fans took it too far in the MTV Most Anticipated New Movie poll anyway. In 2012, MTV set up Snow White against Cosmopolis, Pattinson's indie. Voting was crazy, and after a few days it had to be halted, scrapped and started over.
KStew's fans had written and distributed a script that they could use to vote where for every one vote, 10 votes registered. They weren't very discreet and everyone knew they were cheating. MTV could see how it was rigged, so none of those votes counted and it was started over. Cosmopolis won.
They did the same thing when she won BAFTAs Newcomer award and they didn't get caught that time. They bragged about doing it, tho. Anything for the win.
There was this weird anti-JLaw emergence at this time that I think made online spaces go harder for Divergent than they would have otherwise? I remember being exhausted at how many times I opened a post or tweet and it would be about how Shailene was actually the better actress, prettier, smarter, better in general, that she would be a JLaw killer, etc. It even happened on here. It was incredibly irritating because its not even like they were direct competition and ultimately I think it even hurt Shailene because people were hardcore predicting she would be bigger than JLaw and when that didn't happen... It's just weird how we pit woman against each other and force them to compete just because they are vaguely the same age and also acted in one similar movie series lol. But yeah, that is the main memory I have from Divergent-people using it to shit on JLaw and Hunger Games and then it never really took off like expected.
