I literally got into a tiff with someone on Twitter a few days ago about/over this in Eve 6000's tweet about this. Like even if things are open I am certain there are rules to that but in general I am not sure why monogamy is always described as 'heteronormative' by some gay men. Everyone should have the relationship they want to have with their partner/s and communicate their needs with them but I just.....don't understand the idea of monogamy or non monogamy as coded to one sexuality or another.

Both gay relationships and open relationships are considered "outside the norm", so I feel like it's less of a leap to associate the two. I also feel like it's less taboo to discuss being open or nonmonogamous in gay relationships because there aren't the same cultural expectations as there are in straight relationships.

I don't agree that monogamy is inherently hetero-normative, but I can see the leap for the opposite.

I think it’s because a lot of gay men think men aren’t “designed” to be monogamous and that women are the ones who push for it.

I think some gay men buy into the gender essentialist belief that men have higher sex drives than women, so men attracted to men can't be expected to be monogamous.

Lol not surprising. I remember my mom saying some of the songs she’d hear on the radio sounded like the relationship was going south and this was like 2-3 years ago.

they were probably open but then Ricky developed a better relationship with the third than his husband. That’s basically been the trend of all the open relationships/throuples I’ve seen lmao.
