OP, you wrote the actor's name as Michael Perrineau rather than Howard Perrineau (who played Michael)

I never liked Michael's character, but looking at it now, they really went out of their way to make him unlikable. The whole first season was just him being a deadbeat dad (another racist stereotype) and then he randomly killed two people out of nowhere.
