The only Pokemon I ever played was Go! but I'm a sucker for adding fantastical elements to the real world so they get my vote even though there's Ryan Reynolds. Although Sonic has Jim Carrey chewing scenery..
There's such high barriers to entry for Pokemon and Mario games (buy a Nintendo console that may be 300$, buy a game that may be 60$, you can buy an old console, but god help you if yo don't have the correct cables)
And there's so many Pokemons! Does one play chronologically? Through the different consoles or just pick one? I don't want an encyclopedia before starting.
I never played Mario but as a kid I was a fan of the Sonic and Pokémon games.
Film wise I prefer Sonic (moreso the sequel but I liked Jim Carrey in both) and Mario. I thought Detective Pikachu was mediocre after the “live action Pokémon” gimmick wore off.
I remember some critics were saying there was too much focus on them in the sequel and everyone else was like “But that’s what we wanted?”
The first film kind of felt like your standard “cgi animal buddy” film (Jim Carrey was great though) whereas the second was what I was hoping to see from the beginning.
I think out of all the movies, Detective Pikachu was my favorite. I'm biased tho because Pokemon is my favorite video game franchise and my dumb geek ass CRIED!!! CRIED!!! when the film started on that Pokemon farm.
I like all three movies tho. Mario movie had gorgeous animation. Sonic movie had surprisingly really fun characters, even the humans.

Sonic is just "Hey, it's on Steam, it's 10$".

You really can just pick up any one and have at it. You might not recognize some of the older pokemon but it's not gonna hurt anything.
