We’re currently going through an ASD eval for our daughter and it’s so true that when most people think of ASD they think of how it presents in boys/men. Girls often go undiagnosed until they become women.

I’ve followed Kathryn since her accident. I can’t even imagine how brutal that recovery was.

So I have OCD but also have had a couple counselors ask if I'd ever been evaluated for autism. I've looked up autism in adult women online, and some of the lists seem like they could fit anyone, autistic or not. Does anyone have any good resources that I could look at?

A word of caution - a lot of these questions, they use in official screenings more to gauge your reaction to the questions than your actual answer. So it is far from perfect.

Its World Autism Day on the 2nd.

One of my school friend had family GPs for parents but wasn't diagnosed until 25. Ended up leaving her job and completed a PhD in Autism, she's kicking ass doing great research and advocacy for women who are neurodivergent.

Glad Megan is able to talk about it openly.

There was a post on ONTD about characters who might have had ASD and that post led me to some links. My best friend and my mom think that I may be on the spectrum but my psychologist and psychiatrist don't. My psychologist told me that OCD and ASD have shared traits. But just as Prescott says, even if I had ASD, there is a good chance that my psychologist may not be able to recognize it because I don't exactly fit the bill.

OCD & ASD do overlap but they’re also very commonly comorbid. I don’t know anyone IRL with OCD that didn’t later get an ASD diagnosis. For what that’s worth!

"I don’t know anyone IRL with OCD that didn’t later get an ASD diagnosis." Wait, am I understanding this correctly? They were also later diagnosed with ASD as well?

My mom tells me that I had some traits growing up and I have no idea what my best friend sees tbh. She always tells me that empathy doesn't come easily to me even though sympathy and compassion are my strong traits in her opinion.

Yes, these people all had a formal OCD diagnosis and were later diagnosed with ASD that had been missed.

The empathy thing makes total sense, I’m the same. I have a hard time showing empathy while also being very sensitive to how others feel & compassionate. That’s the same for my eldest while my youngest (getting evaluated soon) has no empathy.

The thing with ‘the spectrum’ is that people (even professionals) think it means ‘how autistic you are’ when in reality each autistic trait is a spectrum in itself…so we’re either usually seen as hyper empathetic or lacking any whatsoever. I hope that makes any sort of sense!
