He's an alcoholic and she already threatened to leave him for it before. My guess is his sobriety went out the window again, but she loves him and doesn't want to say goodbye forever. I sympathize with this because my dad's business partner and his wife were separated for similar reasons when he died of a heart attack a few months back. His widow calls my dad all the time sobbing about how much she misses him and how much she regrets separating instead of getting him help.

this is sad because they seemed so made for each other :/ also I hope his sobriety is ok through this, it has to be a huge stress and he's worked so hard at his recovery.

When I hear "mutual separation with hopes of reconciliation", I usually expect that is only one person's hope lol. It sounds like a placating phrase from the one who's already over it to get the other person to agree to a "mutual" separation, but maybe I'm an evil cynic.
