Maybe their publicists intervened or something, but I'm pretty sure I'm judging the journalist for not asking the harder questions here. The backlash has been going on for a while now, how do you avoid it like that?

it's pretty standard practice for publicists from shows/movies to tell journalists that they won't sign off on the story being run and/or give them pre-approved questions. it's a PR piece in an industry mag
