She’s right and she should say it. I used to work with someone who commented that she was glad her teenage daughter was pretty, because she wasn’t smart, and you apparently can’t be both (according to her). It made me sad that the whole pretty or smart, but not both are standards of measurements for women.

"At least she's cute, haa haa!" is still way too common.

Great that a girl's own mother is saying shit like this

A cousin of mine is currently pregnant and was disappointed to find out she's having a girl because, "girls are so difficult and expensive... hopefully she's at least pretty". Her mum and boyfriend openly expressed disappointment too. The poor kid hasn't even been born yet and is already having to deal with gendered bullshit from her family. It's just really upsetting, especially when it's coming from women.

She’s decent at comedy. I liked her in 30 Rock.

loved her in 30 Rock. i was disappointed when they turned her into the spicy latina stereotype though.

She managed to break that 'rule' fairly easily though, because she did three comedies in the space of four years? ("Breaking Up", "Fools Rush In" & "Dogma") ...

I haven’t checked the source but maybe she’s really referring to the difficulty in landing the comedic roles she did get in the 90s , as in, she had to really fight for them.

I do remember the big deal around her doing Frida because she was definitely never marketed to audiences as a serious Actress up to that point. She always got cast as some kind of bombshell.

This. I don't even care much for her, but it enrages me that Cuarón couldn't cast her in Gravity.

Oh wow! I had no idea Cuarón wanted her for that role. I would have really liked to see that!
