In his own way James Cameron is an underdog because everyone's always predicting his failure and a lot of people want him to flop lol. All his movies are insanely popular followed by ton of cultural backlash, and then ppl predict the and hope his next one will flop, and then it overperforms.

I wouldn't consider Avatar a standard Disney franchise since he took 13 years to follow up on the first one, idk how much he cares about franchise-building.

& I think at this point, PIB is the second highest grossing animated film in the pandemic after Minions.

It's somewhat dark tbh I think Shrek may be the rare franchise that grew with its initial audience while still being for kids and families.
