wait, you could just skip math class in the UK until recently?

No, but we can leave school at 16 so it’s not compulsory to study maths if you stay on. Well, it wasn’t.

The last year in my province in Canada, grade 12, math is selective. However, many students take it anyway if they are planning to go to post-secondary schools. Most post-secondary schools require grade 12 math.

I mean, in the US (or NY at least) you can stop taking math or science classes if you take extra language or art classes. I didn’t take physics in 12th grade.

tbh as a Brit I find it super weird that you guys separate topics within Maths into classes lol

I feel like it was required where I went to high school, but also many colleges like to see four years of math in any case when you apply (or at least that was the case at the time)

Yeah, I know it’s state dependent. No idea what colleges want now since I graduated over 20 years ago and went to an art college.

Yeah. I didn’t take Calculus.

Def not in California. I did honors geometry, AP alegebra ii, AP trig/math analysis and AP stats plus honors bio, AP Chem, physics and honors Anatomy. Still had to take art, Drama I and 3 years of French. Only got eligible for free period and opting out of an elective because I did leadership and student government for two years that needed their own periods.

Most colleges in the CA require either stats or calculus for GEs and the AP exams were ways to skip ahead. My school also partnered with a CSU and offered extra college math classes to really get ahead.

When I was in high school in NY they made me take physics and I hated it so much haha.

Really? That’s weird because I graduated in ‘99 and the current NYS regents requirements are still only 6 credits each in math and science. Was it still 9th Earth Science, 10th Biology, 11th Chemistry, 12th Physics?

I graduated in 2011 so maybe it changed. Because I was doing college level French at that point and they still made me take physics. Luckily I had a cool teacher. My chem teacher was a literal demon and I had to get a tutor because I simply could not be taught by her.

Also my physics teacher was the school football coach and I decided to drop it a week into the year and he came after me in the hall and ranted at me that art was useless (he knew I dropped it to take additional art classes) and physicals was important and I needed to know it. I love science but I loved art more. Now I’m a book designer and have never needed to use high school physics.
