i love him sooooooooo much. this is how you make an amazing pinocchio movie. i was tired and bored with disney beating us over the head about how he wanted to be a real boy, so the way this was adapted is fucking beautiful

i'm just annoyed this won't be up for best picture because it'll be pigeonholed in best animation all season long. easily one of the best movies overall this year

I just watched this and was whelmed haha

I thought Pinocchio was annoying af and he just wouldn't listen!

This isnt related to thoughts on the movie but was that fascist thing part of the original story?

If it helps add context, the movie was co-written by the creator of Over The Garden Wall and that's my main grievance with Greg

I saw a screening with an introduction by GDT and an exhibit about MoMA about the making of the movie and both made it very clear that the angle they chose was that sometimes the good and right thing to do is disobey, especially if it's in the face of fascism. GDT also felt that previous interpretations of the story were about how Pinocchio had to change to be loved and become a real boy. In this version, he wanted Pinocchio to be loved for who he already was and become a more actualized and mature version of himself.

Tbh if this doesn't have best animated on lockdown then I'll be... really surprised. The only other movie that came out this year that will actually score a nom that I feel is a worthy winner is Turning Red.
