Didn't she sell her company?

Never heard of that movie actually. I had no idea she ever played a "teenager". She was already in college in Cruel Intensions right?

She played a teenager in number of films in her early career, most notably Fear, Pleasantville and the aforementioned.

Edit: Cruel Intentions is about high schoolers.

You know it's weird, even though I know Cruel Intentions was supposed to be set in High School and they wear uniforms and everything, I definitely still think of it as college haha. I guess it's because it's at a prep school? And probably because I was a young teen when I watched it and they seemed too adult for me. That's kind of how I think of Outside Providence and School Ties, too.

yeah the prep school gives off that vibe. i actually had to double check to make sure it wasn't college because i remember it being marketed as a teen/high school film when it came out. i was a teen myself back then but all "teen" actors in the 90s seemed/looked way more mature than me and my peers. probably because actors were much older than their characters lmao.

It shames me that when I first read the book and watched the movie, I thought she was the “villain”, even though on subsequent rereads/watches that is very clearly not the author’s intention. Internalised misogyny, woo.

It's incredibly well done - it's so easy as the movie audience/readers to fall into the trap of accepting Matthew Broderick's character's view because Tracy isn't presented in a "likeable" light, but of course that's the exact misogyny the story is highlighting

Casting Broderick was a genius move for the film, because he is so likeable as an actor. In 1999 especially, if he was in a movie, you were on his side. And yet he behaves terribly to a 16 year old who was groomed by his adult friend.

The more often I watch the movie or read the book, the more I love Tracy. And the more I think how clever the story is, and how much it is saying about misogyny and education. Whenever I find a new movie podcast, one of the first things I look for is whether they have an episode about Election, because I find it such a fascinating movie to talk about, and I love to hear it being dissected, especially through the lens of today.

The second book was cute but unnecessary. The whole time I was reading it though I was thinking “They BETTER cast Reese if they film this.”

I just bought Election (book) this week for my daughter for Christmas. I think maybe she saw the movie years ago, but I want her to read the book and then we will watch the movie together.

90s-00s Reese was 🔥🔥🔥!!

I don’t think she has the strongest range but determined-ruthless types are a bit of her strong suit.

They use to play this on FX all the time lol.

I get streaming service fatigue but Paramount+ is actually pretty good - if you like Star Trek, Twilight Zone, The Good Wife, Evil, MTV stuff, etc. It also now has Showtime and somehow the price didn't go up (for us, maybe we're grandfathered in though). The commercials ARE kind of a bummer, but I like it still.
