I haven't finished the season yet, but so far I'm whelmed too. just... meh.
Debicki is uncanny as Diana tho. I can't stop looking at her and thinking how alike they look
And I see how West portrays Charles' mannerisms, but he's just so much not like Charles still. Also, I dont think they portrayed Charles in a bad light (so far), sure there's the Camilla tampon scandal and just being a shitty husband in general, but nothing outrageous? I mean, the speech he gave about the royal family, how it should change to embrace modernity and the Prince's Trust bit, were all very positive to his image imo
This season was so boring. I know they're setting up for the terrible tragedy that is to come, but Peter Morgan went easy on Camilla, Charles and Diana. There was barely any of their messiness from that time, so King Chuck didn't really have anything to worry about.
Also, Dominic West sucked as Charles. He was just playing himself. Like, Josh O'Connor actually became the character. Also, Claire Foy's portrayal of the Queen>>>>>>>
The only interesting character this season was Sidney Johnson. Netflix released a video that goes more in depth into his story https://youtu.be/ridJ3r_YGOw
there’s something about him, i think the term i’m looking for is jolie laide? the real charles was always just ugly (sorry) but some of those close ups of josh as charles, even when he’s being an asshole were so unexpectedly pretty
the romanovs episode was just an excuse for them to film an increasingly more gratuitously violent imperial family execution scene. and blaming their deaths on queen mary because she was jealous????? was truly wild. the government was absolutely not at all gung ho about them coming and even rejected alexandra’s sister’s request to foster just the girls. they just wanted george to make the final decision and essentially his decision was always going to be no.
tbh i’m not sure why the british royals get all the blame though, they had spanish, swedish, danish and greek relatives who could’ve given them sanctuary and also refused 👀
I actually really liked how the show portrayed Penny and Elizabeth's differing interpretations of Mary's decision. Penny saw it as Mary being unwilling to have a potential rival under her roof, while Elizabeth saw it as a purely political decision that Mary didn't relish making. They both projected their own situations on a historical figure (though tbf the show implies that Elizabeth's interpretation is more accurate).
IA that the writers laying the entire decision at Mary's feet was ridiculous, though, like that really was not her call.
It infuriates me that the British Royal Family is blamed for not saving the Romanovs.
There was literally one WEEK where it would have been possible to get Alex and the children out. (Never Nicky) One week. And then they were moved. And Alex wouldn’t leave Nicky, and wouldn’t let the children leave witho it her. (And I’m not sure if Alix would have been let go) At BEST the women could leave in that week. And even then it was a long shot.
The idea that the British were going to go into Russia during World War I to save the Romanovs is pure fantasy.
