My brother was murdered by Jeffrey Dahmer. Here's what it was like watching the Netflix show that recreated the emotional statement I gave in court. https://t.co/PrSGdinjAI

True crime needs to die, with all puns intended

The way this genre dehumanizes the victims and their families is so frustrating to see. And then you have those who idolize and completely obsess over these serial killers.. shows the sickness in our society tbh

i think there is value to some true crime, but it's unfortunate that it's gotten to the place it largely has

I think I feel different when it's a documentary and families and victims can decide wether or not they want to participate in it. Are the ones that produce it greedy? Probably, yeah. But I think in general they are more respectful and even educational (for lack of a better word)? Sometimes I appreciate listening to specialists also talk about behaviors and the psychology behind it all.
I think it's definitely shittier when they do reenactments like on this show (that I haven't watched and probably won't now) without even talking to the survivors or their loved ones, considering it's for pure entertainment and especially when it comes from a huge streaming platform like Netflix. Fuck them.

True crime in general is such a tricky subject, but when victims are this outspoken, how can you willingly support something like this?

I don't know about other victims' families in this instance, but it also seems so difficult when there are so many victims and their friends/families, as each individual or group may have their own thoughts or preferences or goals in terms of publicity. some may think it helps, some may not want it at all. It's so tough.

It was her statement that made me ultimately decide to not watch this. I think she was understanding that’s true crime is a popular genre, but she made it clear that THIS is traumatizing for her and her family. I don’t even think she initially said ‘don’t watch it’. She just wanted everyone to know that this hurt her family all over again.

I think a story like Dahmer’s is a good example of how police failed the victims at every turn, on how the fact that they were non white and gay was more than enough reason for police to just ignore what was happening. But something like this isn’t meant to point out the failings of those who should have been there to help. It’s just murder porn.
