My brother was murdered by Jeffrey Dahmer. Here's what it was like watching the Netflix show that recreated the emotional statement I gave in court. https://t.co/PrSGdinjAI

Her take was kinder than what Netflix deserves.

I don’t plan on watching but it’s sad and does show how racism played a huge part in him getting away with it. He wasn’t a clever or sneaky killer. Those poor victims. With the rise of apps and how many young boys probably meet older men, it’s terrifying to think how this still happens but doesn’t get media attention

my thing about the whole highlighting the role homophobia/racism played in his ability to commit his crimes is that it's absolute worth examining... but i don't think it needed to be done in a dramatized way where we see the brutalization of the victims, some of whom were literal children, reenacted. if ryan murphy felt that this was something worth reckoning with, he should've directed or executive produced a documentary that put the victims at center stage.

(not coming for you btw, your comment just seemed like a good one to express my thoughts in reply to)

This, and also direct a considerable portion of the profits to a helpful org rather than Netflix execs.

I actually called out a big creator on TikTok last night and they deleted their video. Good.

I would also like to take this time to discuss true crime people on YouTube, who take these victims stories and always have some sort of ad in the middle of the videos. I know for a fact you did not get this family’s permission and now you wanna talk about Nord VPN or what the fuck ever. you should not be making money off of these people. If you were really about sharing the story and trying to get it out there then you would not have a sponsorship.

tbh yes

I don't do true crime at all, I do disaster videos, and there's very few of them I can stand. They don't do any in-video sponsorships (they may do ads before or after, but I have premium), and have the correct, somber tone.

I had a video suggested to me from the channel Brew, which does less disaster and more medical catastrophes, and I couldn't do it, because they were so glib, and would slip into an ad. The first one was just, hmm. The one that horrified me was the second video I watched, where a nine-year-old was taken to the hospital and died due to food poisoning, and right after saying that, he cracked a joke and went into an ad. Even people who had been watching the channel was like, "WTF."

I agree!

Also, when I think of what's wrong with the true crime YouTube community, one of the first people I think of is Bailey Sarian. I couldn't imagine dealing with this traumatic event, and watching someone talk about it so casually while applying makeup and cracking jokes. She's been called out by several family members of victims, and never gave any response or acknowledged them iirc.

It’s always weird to me how you can depict someone, use their words and everything when they are still alive…and especially when they’re not a public figure under any definition

That’s my thing- do all that without their permission AND make money off it, while there’s a good chance such funds would help the victims/families much more than the “creator”! I felt a similar feeling with the Apple+ series on Memorial hospital during Katrina- a lot of those people are still traumatized and still struggling, but don’t seem to be getting any of the money. That’s my biggest issue- if you want to “help” by sharing their story, actually help by sharing the profits.
