i havent gotten around to watching this show yet, but am i right that its a lot more similar to the Star Trek shows we loved (TNG/Ds9/Voyager), as opposed to the actual new Trek shows are?

A lot of the producers from Voyager (Braga) are very involved, a lot of guest stars are from Trek, Frakes and Tom Paris (blanking on the actor's name, sorry lol) directed episodes, etc. The subreddit is full of fans who swear it fills the void those Trek shows left behind for them. I can't speak on it directly since I was a fan of The Orville first and discovered Trek through it and not the other way around, but to me it feels a lot like Voyager did.

Please give it a chance :) The first season has a lot of humor but it's toned down a bit later on. Maybe check out season 1, episode 4, "If the Stars Shall Appear" if you just want to start out with one.

Yes, and the first season borrows heavily from existing Trek episodes too. Seth is a lifelong Trek stan and it shows.

Though I have to rep for the newest Trek series (Strange New Worlds) because it's very tonally 80s/90s Trek.

definitely, right down to the aesthetics and the score

Is this show any good? Or is it a satirical Star Trek?

Also, the hot red headed doctor from ER is in this? 😮

This show is amazing. It's more of a love letter or homage to Trek, not straight up satire. Please give it a chance.

It's not really satirical, but when it started it out the premise was more like instead of following the Enterprise and all the best people in the federation, what if you got to see the ship of misfit toys.

it's not really a parody/satire of Star Trek as it is a love letter

it feels more like old Star Trek than anything else on tv to me right now, including (perhaps ESPECIALLY including) what is actually being called Star Trek these days

I would say the early first season it leans more comedy but it is obvious pretty much from the start that it's more of a pure sci-fi show than a comedy

op, don't know if you've seen this interview yet but it's also a good read: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/seth-macfarlane-orville-trans-allegory-1235175929/

I'm a total slut for Seth and his interviews! TYSM for pointing this one out to me! He's not great about updating his twitter with new interviews lol

They are hit or miss for me tbh. Like I love the interviews about the show, but when he riffs on general topics it's always so prototypical White Male Liberal™ like his thoughts on Chappelle, Rock, politics, etc

I'm a little upset that I like this show because I HATE Seth MacFarlane.

hahah I get you. and well, Brannon Braga is a big part of this show, too, and a lot of us 90s Trekkies developed a seething hatred for him long ago as well, but goddammit if both he and Seth don't make a damn fine sci-fi show

I'm considering adding a note to the top of any future Orville-related discussion posts for people wavering on whether or not to give this show a chance, because there's been a pattern of "should I...?" in the comments.

Do you think that's a good idea? Would it bog down the posts too much? I'd definitely add it under a cut or spoiler, especially since it will most likely boil down to a long, meandering paragraph of me begging on my knees for everyone on the fence to give the show a good chance lmao

I mean, they're your posts! I don't feel like they'd bog the posts down much and I do think it's nice for people to hear it in the comments, but it's good for people to hear it in any way, tbh.

also have to consider that ONTD doesn't read so whatever you put in the post may be ignored anyway lol
