ONTD Original: Great Scandals of The Evangelical Church

Jun 27, 2022 21:12

Every time an ONTD post about a religion-based scandal went up, I wanted to write about my own life as a prisoner of a parent who bought into this easily twisted doctrinal belief. But when the movie 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye' was announced, I got off my ass and started writing. There are a few of these scandals that are deeply personal to me, as the ( Read more... )

The fact that Jim Bakker has basically been able to recreate a copy of PTL/Heritage USA is infuriating. The only mitigating factor is that he actually reaches a smaller percentage with his bullshit.

I enjoyed Eyes of Tammy Faye, but it let her off way too easy. I wish it had actually depicted her level of greed and deceit. Fuck both of them.

I've always bitten my tongue when I would see comments about how Tammy seemed sweet and 'but the Surreal Life!' knowing that she was in on the grift just like Jim.

Honestly, I hated Heritage USA but I LOVE North Carolina. I spent most of my time in Rocky Mount and outside of Raleigh, where my cousins live. I've already determined that after surviving the hellhole that is Florida, the furthest south I will ever reside again is North Carolina. I had to be bribed with bbq, fresh Krispy Kreme and a respite to my cousins in Rocky Mount for a couple of days to agree to a week's stay at Heritage.

Yeah Charlotte has changed so much in the past ten years, it's probably unrecognizable now. Rocky Mount hasn't changed much, neither has Raleigh really. But the Krispy Kremes now have vending machines so I guess it works out.

It's so funny tho, NC is a state but also a tourism destination if you live here 😂

*bows to the Dean of ONTD PoliSci*

I've actually started seeing these posts as therapy. It wasn't just me, these are some warped and evil people and I no longer feel guilty about hating them.

Funny story: when mom started with her religious fanaticism...we started as Southern Baptists. The pastor was actually a very nice (seeming) man named Pastor Haile, it was a church a few towns over in Farmingville and since we were in the North (Long Island, NY) it wasn't SO all encompassing. But when I read those SBC reports, I've been seriously considering doing a deeper dive on THAT ball of whackadoodles. The SBC is the gateway into so many of these non-denominational scam artists and it's terrifying and some of them form because Southern Baptists are too liberal in their eyes ( ... )
