The Orville creator and writer Seth MacFarlane has written a tie-in novella based on a scrapped script from season 3, titled "Sympathy for the Devil". Pre-order for ebook/audiobook available now!

Due to Covid shutdowns, we had to scrap one episode of The Orville: New Horizons. It was an outlier-a conceptually experimental story. Rather than let ( Read more... )

I would not pick a book up that has a cover like that

It really is terrible. I'm sure the story itself will be 🔥 though. Seth is usually a great writer.

i'm assuming they wanted it to look like the old star trek novel covers which were also usually awful lol

sad because this feels like another nail in the cancellation coffin, haha, because why not save the script if it's so good, but I've also more or less accepted that reality anyway :(

I get to live in a world where the Orville is canceled after three seasons and there's over 9000 Star Trek shows I have zero desire to watch :(

I am thinking of starting Babylon 5 tho since I noticed it's on HBO Max! I've heard very good things

I tried to start B5 and the terrible quality of the picture turned me off. That and my depression's need for instant gratification.

Are you me? haha. I noped out because of the video/CGI quality. I couldn't get over it at all.

Tom mentioned on Reddit that they will be able to shoot it one day, but there's also a possibility that it really would have fit best in season 3. At least we get something, though.

The orville was truly a pleasant discovery, I really enjoy it as a show.

I'm so happy to hear that! I keep trying to convince a friend and her husband to try it out and I guess they're just dead-set against it. I wish I could get a bullhorn and shout about how much I love it from the rooftops though. I wish I was a famous celebrity and had the chance to go on and on about how much I love it in a big interview or something.

My favorite TV show of all time was FRINGE and they have a VERY similar plotline unfold as this last episode of The Orville, but their execution (in my humble opinion) was incredibly disappointing. They basically just erased what happened and there were no consequences for anyone involved. The fact that -- so far - they've handled the same plotline 100% better in EVERY respect... The Orville is now my absolute favorite show of all time now.

I was one of those people who super-resisted watching this show lol if it helps you sell it to people? Like I saw the initial ads for it and thought, Seth MacFarlane? Doing a Star Trek parody? Please just kill me instead?

I am one of those people who are NOT a huge fan of Galaxy Quest lol I didn't find it nearly as charming as everyone else seems to so I was especially not here for The Family Guy Dude's parody

but then my roommate sat me down and basically forced me to watch it and it felt like such a love letter more than a parody that I was instantly charmed. It just hits these intangible notes in style and setting and fuck, even the score? and aesthetic that is the exact kind of sci-fi I want and need in my life

OMG thank your roommate for introducing you to the show for me 🤣 My friend is an online friend so I can't force her to watch it. I've written blog entries about it and she doesn't even read them, I don't think. Oh well.

Once Seth decided to make it more a straight sci fi show with a few stray jokes rather than a comedy with a SF backdrop (because at first, WOOF) it really ended up being much better than it had any right to be lol.

I feel like that happened more or less halfway through season one tbh, this show was always just a sci-fi show in comedy costuming

yeah, if i tell people to watch it i definitely advise them to skip the first few episodes!

I think he's mentioned in interviews that this current season is the vision for the show he always had. He just had to hype up the comedy (and I don't think he had any control over the season 1 trailers, either) in order to get it sold I believe.

Did anyone ever read the first novel (wait, maybe it was a comic?) they released?

Oh man, I forgot to even mention the comics! Crap lmao Thanks for reminding me!

There are six or so stories that have been published and they're in comic and combined graphic novel form. They're even releasing them in a giant omnibus edition that will be coming out soon, I believe. I really recommend them. They're not as good as the show but they're little side stories and in-between seasons stuff. I've enjoyed them a lot and I hope they continue releasing more comics even after season 3 ends.
