Was not expecting so many noms for Paradise Square. I haven't seen it so I can’t say if it’s deserved but based on the reviews, poor ticket sales, and their infamous producer, I was expecting a post nomination closing notice for sure.
Katrina Lenk not making in was only so surprising cause so many other categories had 6 nominees.
I was already predicting A Strange Loop to win Best Musical, and I know the nominating committee is a very small group compare to the voting body (especially this year where only half the nominators could vote) but I can’t help but wonder if Six underperforming and ASL over-performing means they have it in the bag.
Tamika Lawrence was a long shot since the show closed but I was still hoping she would make it in.
I saw Paradise Square during its pre-Broadway run a few years ago. The show definitely deserves a choreography nomination. I was surprised that Six got a choreography nomination too because most of what I remember was very basic.
I'm only familiar with Christopher Wheeldon's ballet choreography and I really wondered how much original choreography would be done for the MJ show (as opposed to recreating choreography from the music videos). I watched this and was not impressed:
Katrina Lenk not getting nominated is very interesting to me, especially since Rosalie Craig did get the Olivier nomination in London. I know the reviews were a little mixed on her but I thought the general consensus was that she had improved a lot since then.
I assumed most nominators saw her earlier in the run, when reception about her was more meh, especially when you consider only a little over half the nominators were eligible to vote this year, as many were unable to see all the shows. It makes sense that the ones that were able to finish the requirements saw Company earlier.
Seven nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play and none of them are Daniel Craig? Love to see it.
I was having dinner in NYC a couple months ago and through eavesdropping realized I was next to one of the producers of Paradise Square, which was about to start previews. He kept raving about the lead actress and said she was like a young Audra McDonald. I'm assuming he was talking about Joaquina Kalukango so I hope she wins.
