It doesn't. I was sceptical at first too, but since the Lloyd/McAvoy combo hasn't let me down yet, I watched it back when it was on in London and it really worked. I'm actually hoping they'll put it onto NT Live sometime so I can watch it again.

Cyrano is not ugly per se, he just has a giant nose that he has a complex about. Many productions do away with the nose to emphasise how much of Cyrano's complex is a projection versus him actually being unattractive.
