This is a really lovely little retrospective on that film and also that quote from River is almost shocking to me in that we still don’t have that in many ways but for him to understand that at that time at his age is really exceptional
the guy was ahead of his years and ahead of his time, always. it's wild how progressive he was and none of it was performative, all organic. i've shown this film to some of my friends and some of the less...intellectual friends, we'll say, couldn't understand the impact because "we have like, brokeback mountain and CMBYN and shit."
and i'm like YA'LL. you would never have HAD brokeback mountain or CMBYN if river hadn't done this movie. i get it's not as ~shocking~ to see this type of vulnerable queer beauty now as it was then, but these bitches have no imagination!
I watched this for the first time a couple years ago, and it was *very* different from what I was expecting, lol. Still not sure if I liked it, tbh, but it certainly was unique! And they are indeed both very beautiful in the film.
I'm always sad-angry when I see this picture now because the vultures at the National Enquirer used this (along with other stills in the movie where he was passed out) in their article about River's death. It grossed me out so much I never paid for it again.
awful how they tainted it. i was a mere bb when he died so i don't have those associations. to me i love how caring keanu looks towards river. i apologize if i triggered sad memories
It was such an awful, awful time. TV shows like "A Current Affair" broadcasting Joaquin's 911 call, all sorts of speculation, people dragging Samantha Mathis saying she gave him the drugs, reporters harassing Joaquin in the street, all the lies told, etc. The only publication with any class was People, who used a beautiful rare B/W photo of him on the cover with his birth and death dates. I don't blame Joaquin for being the way he is because that poor bb has gone through a lot.
River was such a ray of pure light, and its such a fucking loss.
everything i've heard/read about how his death was handled at that time is horrifying. by literally all accounts, he was a wonderful person and it's so depressing how they villainized him in death. so undeserved. and i agree...it's no wonder why joaquin is the way he is. i don't blame him a bit.
i know he named his baby River. i wonder if it's strange for the family to say his name so frequently and in reference to someone else, now.
