i've never seen CMBYN in it's entirety but i'm not sure how anyone could watch it now after everything that came out about Armie. was the movie itself bad?
Yes. Armond White's review in Out magazine perfectly summed up how I felt after seeing it: "super-bourgeois fantasy that exploits the queer audience's romantic needs by packaging them and falsifying them."
lmaoooo i cannot lie, all i was thinking during that portion of the article is that keanu was so uncomfortable with improv bc he cannot act! he must've been so intimidated by such a natural talent like River, who preferred improvisation and "reality" as opposed to reading lines off a page. love him but yeah....
i've definitely side-eyed Gus a bit from time to time when i think about what he allowed to go down in his house. i love the shit out of MOPI but there's no denying it was a turning point for River's health.
he allowed the kids who were acting in his movie to stay at his house and party all night, doing heroin/coke/etc. he claims he didn't know that was all going on but no one believes him. as a director he has some responsibility for the wellbeing of those on his set.
he also wrote a book called "Pink" about River and Keanu. He changed their names and put them into a bizarre dreamworld so he could leave it up to peoples' imaginations which parts of the book were real or made up, but he very clearly states that keanu and river had a sexual relationship, which neither of them every put out there, so would be considered exploitative since he did so without their consent (river was already dead when he released the book.)
The exchange around the fire where River's character confesses to Keanu's that he's in love with him and Keanu holds him is still one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema.
me too. and the extended version where you see river's leg wrapping around keanu's, the kisses they plant on each other's necks....it's SO raw and devastating. pasting it here although i'm sure everyone's already seen it.

I wish River had got help. I always wonder what career he would have and how much good he would have done for the world if he hadn't passed.
