"“The only real way to deal with this elegantly is to say: I’m not sure there’s anybody who has one of these devices [a mobile phone] that would feel comfortable having a team of lawyers scour their private text messages.”

Not so much to defend him but he's not off with that to a degree. Cause when Kesha was taking Dr.Luke to court I think the lawyers got ahold of her text messages with Gaga where they trash-talking Katy Perry (and that got released into the public) who I think because of that had to later testify in court. And a lot of people were looking at Katy's testimony weirdly for it when I don't think she had any fault.

I could be remembering this wrong but I do think there is a possible issue of having your phones searched?

Well, I’ll admit that I’ve said some pretty crazy stuff in texts and emails to close personal friends; I’ve joked about doing all kinds of shit to a few douchebags who did good friends wrong. Didn’t mean any of the shit literally. Perhaps that makes me a horrible person, I don’t know but at the same time I could care less if someone (not the government) read all texts and emails - hopefully they’d get a good a laugh or shake their head in horror at the lameness of it all.

I mean in the moment it probably won't be funny if it just happens to align with whatever they're investigating. You'll come out innocent cause you didn't do or abide with anything but getting called him must not be fun in the while before they decide there's nothing here.

Me too. I’m not comfortable with things like this being used to define a person who wasn’t in the relationship and have no skin in it. I have a friend who has told me about an ex who abused her, I’m certain the convos we’ve had about him are just about as bad. I don’t know the guy. Never met him. But if my texts or DMs were pulled, I know for a fact I’ve said pigs eat everything and I know where there’s a pig farm. Do I mean it? No. Do I say that shit so my friend knows she’s not alone, I have her back, and give her a little chuckle? Yep.

Wtf!!! Those texts seem pretty cut and dry Mr Bettany. This is just sick.

What context would make this agreeable? Even thinking about my worst enemy I don't graphically discuss murder with other people.

Like even saying I wish so and so were dead. Or they can diaf is pretty much the end of that statement. I don't need a goddamn scenario. I'm calling the police if anyone approaches me with a plan

Exactly... like, there literally is no context that would "reduce" the severity of what he said.

Scenario 1: He didn't know Amber but was fine cosigning Depp's violence??
Scenario 2: He absolutely knew Amber and was fine cosigning Depp's violence??

There is no framing of this scenario in which Bettany can say "oh but the circumstances of my texts aren't what you think they are!" Like no, that's all the "context" we need.

the only thing I can possibly see is he truly had no idea what was going on with Depp and thought he was doing a bit because it sounds like he's trying to force-fit that scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail into this scenario

like how "STUFF HIM IN A BEAR SUIT" is what me and my girlfriend say when someone's boyfriend is being trash

he was just making a playful reference, unaware of Depp's history with Amber or that he was even in a relationship with Amber specifically, it's just the dude version of "wow yeah she sucks let's burn her as a witch, put some gravy on her, build a bridge out of her" playful gender camaraderie

but that's like my absolute most charitable read of this

I mean, I'm sure if anybody dug through my phone there would be a few messages that would cause me some embarrassment, but absolutely nothing like that vile exchange.

Why don't journalists ever ask the follow up question? Like ok then what is the context for saying you will drown her?

I can't get past the paywall to see the whole thing but from my experience in PR, I'm guessing there probably was a follow up and it got shut down.

BC they are weak tbh and we’re all just little mice on this fucked up capitalist wheel where we are lead to believe our careers are more important than integrity
