"'Jews don't count'... that 'polite' society treats anti-Semitism as a semi-acceptable form of prejudice"

THIS! A thousand times this. This is the most important sentence in his entire op-ed. anti-semitism is not taken seriously, and definitely isn’t taken as violent, never ending, racism. Jews are being attacked on a daily basis. Synagogues are collecting donations from the local Jewish community to have guard at their doors because no one will take action. Anti-semitism is the only form of racism that is constantly explained away and forgiven.

Xenophobia is alive and well, it's hardly just jewish people who are hated and treated like shit.

No one would’ve ever known that if you hadn’t chimed in, thanks.

But they’re still talking about antisemitism, if that’s cool with you, though.

That’s the perfect comment to put in an anti-semifinal post. Good hot take. What would I have done without you reminding me, in a space meant to discuss the rise of anti-semitism, that other forms of racism also exist?

I don’t get it. Even if the people helping him out are violent, racist, etc themselves… why HIM?

It’s not like he’s a good actor or likable. He’s just a has-been who SHOULD fuck off somewhere to be never heard of again.

White men find him likeable.

I wanna say men in general because my dad is an Indian man who STILL watches Mel Gibson movies and enjoys him as an actor because he can ~separate the artist from the person~ fucking eyeroll

Ugh, that must be frustrating for you. Does your dad think that he hates Jews, Black people and Latinos but wouldn’t hate Indians? Cos I’d bet money that he does.

cancel culture simply does not exist.
- this clueless guy. REALLY? This is not news, as every fucking woman paying attention knows.

Mel Gibson calling a woman sugar tits is the largely ignored part of this. This man doesn't care about that. Most men don't care about that. This writer is hardly a champion of human rights, ignoring that and most of men's bullshit.

Tbf he does bring up Mel's tirade against his former girlfriend where Mel was very misognystic and racist.

the dude used "sugartits" as in insult against one of his critics on twitter. granted, what the person said was stupid as hell but hmmm @ the casual misogyny (even if it is a reference to mel gibson?).

He points out the misogyny and racism several times as well, but him framing it around the Anti-Semitism is appropriate. 1) It's his POV, as a Jewish man. 2) The way every popular conspiracy theory these days leads back to Anti-Semitism makes it a topic that very much needs public discussion. 3) Anti-Semitism is Mel's bread and butter. It's an enduring and egregious obsession that merits special attention for scale alone.

No disrespect to the importance of his misogny (I am a non-Jewish woman, personally) but 'sugar tits' and 'oven dodger' aren't really on the exact same scale to me.

the antisemitic and misogynistic rant was in july 2006. then in december 2006 his film apocalypto was still released

he didn't work for 4yrs (if you dont count 2 producing credits in 2008) after that. he makes his "comeback" in 2010 and hasn't stopped working since including being nominated for best director at the oscars.

mind you 2010 was also the same year he was accused of DV and the voice mail recordings of him verbally abusing + threatening with sexual/physical violence against his exgf came out. which included racist language against latino and black people.

zero repercussions.

winona ryder said mel called her an oven dodger. not a single fuck was given because it's already expected of him.

cancel culture? the greatest myth

I don't get why people like RDJ explain away his behavior and keep giving him "second chances." Like, if the dude keeps repeating this behavior, maybe stop enabling him by putting him in the same position to repeat those behaviors? Also, if that's what he expresses when he's drunk, that IS his true self. Probably his truest, most unfiltered self. smh

MTE. Not that this would make good, but Gibson isn't just sharing his anti-Semitic, racist, sexist thoughts with his closest friends. He's out there, being awful.

I think RDJ will let a lot slide because of his own drug addiction and the stuff he did while high. It's a a huge blindspot for him.
