The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Abdulrazak Gurnah "for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents." His novels include Paradise, Desertion, and By the Sea. He was born in Zanzibar but fled at the age of 18 during the Zanzibar Revolution. He was a professor at the University of Kent until his retirement.
