as a major alanis fan since i was a kid, i have been so looking forward to this documentary. i read alanis gave the filmmaker free range over all her old archives. even home movies she hadn't seen herself in 25 years.

but i am so confused and bummed to hear that she isn't pleased with the docu. by all accounts, it paints a very flattering picture of her. i mean she's alanis. she's a goddess. i'm wondering if the sexual abuse content is just too much for her?

even before watching, I would probably point at the agenda/narrative not being this spiritual journey phoenix rising artistic ventures attachment parenting she keeps recycling in any interview. She likes to say that she's an open book but honestly, it always feels like a smoke screen with her. Not to mention the fact that that the last album that felt genuine was Flavors and that excludes SCC. Maybe the director felt the need to pick at actual, specific events around that time and not refraining from naming names and specific incidents like Alanis tends to. That last part is not a criticism toward AM, just an observation/

This reminds me about how each time someone tries to do a documentary about Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes, her estate sends cease and desist and threatens lawsuits.

Ray Carney has a whole website on it; he wrote "Cassavetes on Cassavetes."

This sounds weird but it makes sense and I'm sad for her. I'm glad she was able to talk about it, its always seemed like there were shady men and groomers around her and if no-one was looking out for her it might have been hard to acknowledge it was rape, like Mena Suvari.
