I was very active in fanfic then, and I don't remember this happening at all. Must have been different circles.

this was my exact thought, i don't recall seeing a single 9/11 fic and i was in multiple fandoms

I saw a few Star Wars ones. Ziggyjedi posted a couple on sithchicks and caught a lot of hell as it was within 48 hours I think.

I also saw groups ban the idea as too traumatic for those coping with it, direct.

But I think usually you had to search for it. Hers were the only ones I saw.

if young people were using this as a way of coping and trying to process 9/11 (because lbr seeing people die on on our televisions as children had an impact even if we didn't realize at the time) then good for them? but if they were just writing it to write for shock/attention they can get fucked.

It's not surprising. Definitely still weird, but not surprising. I could see once everything finally calms down with lockdown precautions people will start writing lockdown fics too. Hell they probably have!

Oh they definitely have. Characters being stuck together because of lockdown has all kinds of potential for stories.
