I don't think she's caping for him at all. she knew him as a child. she's speaking about their relationship on even stevens almost 20 years ago as child stars. how that effected her, how his fame eclipsed hers. she even mentions that she's sober and wouldn't want to have a relationship with someone who doesn't respect that. I think that's a simplification of what she's saying, and if you respond to this with "she wished him well though"--I mean, she's just trying to be an adult here and only respond to her personal relationship to him from way back when they were kids. she doesn't know him anymore, and hasn't for a very, very long time. she knew nothing about his personal life even when they worked together, according to this article.
