Why would you even want to make a movie out of this? And who would want to see it? If you must for some reason make a movie about a shooting maybe choose one that’s a really long time ago? Or make a fictional one?

Aside from that I just don’t get movies about events like this anyway.

There's a lot of ghouls and weirdos who are entertained by media about murder and serial killers and horrible true life crimes.

I don’t think a massacre is something to make a movie about.

Australians would lose their shit if they made a movie about Port Arthur. And that was in 1996.

It’s just sickening

Especially if you’re going to centre the white woman and not the victims.

It really is sickening. Unfortunately, Justin Kurzel's making a movie about Port Arthur right now - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-01/port-arthur-massacre-survivor-says-film-depiction-inapprorpriate/12939572.

It's completely tasteless and I hope it tanks tbh.

hollywood needs to learn that not every country has the same american need to sensationalize a tragedy and make a movie about a white hero out of it

This movie is going to be written and directed by a guy from New Zealand (if it still happens) and this producer lady who dropped out is from New Zealand so don’t act like it’s just ~Hollywood.

the production company marketing it is american so it'll still be a hollywood production. but next time i'll be sure to be more inclusive of all assholes in the film making industry.

Or that everyone is as desensitized/mass shootings aren't normalized and overlooked in the name of "freedom" elsewhere.

I’d have thought better of Rose Byrne, but celebrities continue to disappoint.

Today, veteran producer Philippa Campbell, a producer on TV hit 'Top Of The Lake', apologised for her involvement and said she had not realized the pain the film would cause.

Utter bullshit. Just say you were too self-absorbed and just cared about yourself / the project. Anyone with any sense of empathy would realize the delicate issue behind creating a film about a mass shooting that took place 2 years ago.

ia, if you actually had any respect for the topic and the people you would yknow...ask permission and for their blessing first. being "surprised at the pain the film would cause" just reeks of arrogance

Right? "I didn't think this small community that faced an immeasurable and traumatic loss would be hurt by me profiting off of it!"
