I'm a therapist and I used to be on a personal mission to end the way people misuse gaslight and honestly have been swept away in how often people think they know what it means and come NOWHERE NEAR the correct usage. It's upsetting and makes the actual term meaningless. I had to give it up.

Of course! Gaslighting is a term from a film made in 1944 where a man marries a woman he doesn't love for her immense wealth. He doesn't love her but wants her money so instead of killing her he slowly begins manipulating her by turning down the gas lamps in their home and waiting for her to come into the rooms, and when she says it's so dark in here turn up the lamps he begins to tell her it's bright and sunny and she should get her eyes checked. Over time this woman begins to doubt her own sense of reality becoming more and more reliant on him and the film I believe ends with her being committed ( ... )
