You want healthy representation from a show about a charismatic cannibal? ok.

ikr. There's a time and place for positive representation, Hannibal was not it.
Did the show have any character that wasn't messed up in one way or another?

Sis, you don't need me to tell you the point of representation is to have the same wide array of healthy, messy or downright toxic relationships portrayed as fully as the heterosexual ones are. In this particular case? If there are movies and TV shows and books dedicated to exploring the romantic/sexual vibes between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, then Mads Mikkelsen could have kissed Hugh Dancy without it being A Big Deal.

Again, I know you already know this, but: it's fiction. There's safety in exploring the dynamic of an abusive relationship - even to the point of tying it to sexual gratification - within an imaginary framework. It says nothing about the audience that enjoys those kinds of made-up stories, and (in most cases) nothing about the writers creating those kinds of scenarios.

And if you're looking for a pairing where a serial killer abused a female co-star and the writers pushed for it to be true love, start with Buffy and Spike and work your way back through centuries of vampire fiction. For starters.

ia. one of the things i found most compelling about hannibal is that it's essentially a romance that's also a horror story, and it never shies away from the horror part - there's beauty and tenderness in the dynamic but the show never lets up in demonstrating that hannibal is a complete monster. i much prefer the complexity of that narrative choice over something like spike/buffy, where as soon as the dynamic turned Romantic, the show decided to just take the easy way out and lazily redeem spike of every horrific thing he ever did to buffy (or anyone) and act like it never happened. killing eve seems to be headed on that track too, sadly, with a villanelle redemption arc being set up ( ... )

my "thoughtful engagement" comment was a dig at the fans who glamorize and romanticize the relationship while glossing over the ugly parts of it, not at you. i understand and respect your concerns

Being disingenuous doesn't really help your claim that you're after thoughtful engagement, but okay:

Buffy and Spike were only portrayed as some sort of love story after Spike regained his soul and essentially became a different person

Let's set aside that the show made sure not to offer any other potential love interest for Buffy in season 6, or most of season 5 after Riley left (which made Spike the default) - if you look through mid-to-late season 7, you'll see that Spike wasn't written any differently after he got his soul. He never apologized for things he did to anyone who wasn't Buffy (and, in fact, the rape attempt was the only point of contention between them, not any of the deeply creepy and murderous things he'd done before that); he wasn't especially repentant for past crimes like killing Robin's mother (to the point of not even giving Nikki's coat back); and any complicated feelings he had about his current circumstances got narrowed down to "mommy issues ( ... )

They’re “shipped” because it’s canon that Hannibal is in love with Will and Will also had romantic feelings towards Hannibal. Also, think about how often queer baiting and kill your gays happens, Bryan basically straight baited instead ( ... )

Is there even a male/female equivalent to this on tv? A pairing where the serial killer abused the female co-star so extremely and then the writers were all “it’s tru wuv” and people wanted them to kiss?

the new star wars trilogy

IA with you, and its funny how this show skirts criticism because people like the actors. Media doesn't exist in a vacuum, yall

sure media doesnt exist in a vaccuum but watching something with ~problematic content doesnt rewrite our values and morals. im willing to bet 99% of hannibal watchers did not go on to develop a psychosexual attachment to a cannibal serial killer therapist.

To be clear, I was not a Hannigram shipper. But even if they did hook up, it wouldn't change the nature of their twisted relationship. Hannibal was clearly trying to get Abigail and Will aboard the murder train and be a lovely murder family. I don't see how anyone could find that ~romantic~, but some of these dingbats think irl serial killers are hot and have warped concepts of "love."
