ia. one of the things i found most compelling about hannibal is that it's essentially a romance that's also a horror story, and it never shies away from the horror part - there's beauty and tenderness in the dynamic but the show never lets up in demonstrating that hannibal is a complete monster. i much prefer the complexity of that narrative choice over something like spike/buffy, where as soon as the dynamic turned Romantic, the show decided to just take the easy way out and lazily redeem spike of every horrific thing he ever did to buffy (or anyone) and act like it never happened. killing eve seems to be headed on that track too, sadly, with a villanelle redemption arc being set up.

granted there's a lot wrong with hannibal the show, hannigram aside, so it's not a series i'm going to die on a hill defending or anything, and i don't doubt that the fandom glamorizes the dynamic too much and glosses over the myriad abuses. but i think its canonical representation of will and hannibal's relationship is nuanced and ugly enough to make for thoughtful engagement, even if some choose not to do it lol.
