“Why did I ever believe a teen girl could hold all the power?” @tavitulle writes https://t.co/AmxRAeYIYN

Tavi Gevinson took to The Cut today to write a piece spurred by the recent documentary, Framing Britney Spears. It's very good and I recommend reading the whole thing! But since ONTD doesn't read, here are ( Read more... )

the nyt is lucky they were the 1st one's to release a doc on her bc in hindsight, it was poorly done imo.

the only thing i loved was Fe :') and the paparrazzi showing lack of remorse.

Ugh her points about abuse are really resonant. So many abuse posts lately, I've been finding it triggering but I am also overwhelmed with the magnitude of more and more (powerful?) women coming out and speaking out about their own experiences. I also just watched the Farrow vs Allen doco. It's relieving (having been through so many abusive relationships before, and helping so many women in my life deal with theirs) but also bringing back so much of the past. I need to parse my consumption.

I'm really bad at math. Can someone please explain "Confidence is not a vector of power,"?

a vector is an element of a vector space. usually represented by an arrow.it has magnitude and direction.

i think what the quote is saying "confidence isnt a replacement of power. confidence isnt a representation of power" basically confidence=/= power

im a worse eng student than i am a math major ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Yes that makes perfect sense! You are an excellent math major teacher. Thank you! :)

I read it as vector in the biology-y sense and took it to mean "confidence does not grant someone power," that just because tavi or britney or whichever young woman seems self-assured and confident doesn't mean that her voice or agency will actually be respected.

but math/science aren't my strong points either lol

I also really wish someone would talk about the fact that WOC are more susceptible and vulnerable to these abusive situations and partners. I think FKA Twigs talked about it briefly in her recent article but I really want to shine a spotlight on it. I notice it so much in my experiences and with my WOC friends - men, often specifically white men, target us because we find it harder to date, we are often more vulnerable, more willing to please etc. It's disgusting. And it comes in some many layers and ways. I know this guy (now a former friend) who ONLY dates Chinese girls, who are especially successful, so he can mooch off of them and he knows they won't complain because they're so grateful that someone (especially a white dude) will date them. He is the first boyfriend to his most recent one and she could not be more grateful that someone finally picked her. Now he lives in her house rent-free while she pays the mortgage. It makes me burn with anger.

Someone posted her "journal" blog posts about him. It sounds terrible. He told her I'm too old for you, but you are mature and famous, so.... And she was 18 and just really, really wanted him to like her.
