Tavi Gevinson took to The Cut today to write a piece spurred by the recent documentary, Framing Britney Spears. It's very good and I recommend reading the whole thing! But since ONTD doesn't read, here are ( Read more... )

I also really wish someone would talk about the fact that WOC are more susceptible and vulnerable to these abusive situations and partners. I think FKA Twigs talked about it briefly in her recent article but I really want to shine a spotlight on it. I notice it so much in my experiences and with my WOC friends - men, often specifically white men, target us because we find it harder to date, we are often more vulnerable, more willing to please etc. It's disgusting. And it comes in some many layers and ways. I know this guy (now a former friend) who ONLY dates Chinese girls, who are especially successful, so he can mooch off of them and he knows they won't complain because they're so grateful that someone (especially a white dude) will date them. He is the first boyfriend to his most recent one and she could not be more grateful that someone finally picked her. Now he lives in her house rent-free while she pays the mortgage. It makes me burn with anger.

Thank you for this post. There also seems to be a hesitance to discuss this in certain contexts because it feels like you are admitting you are undesirable.

I didn't think of it like that but you are totally right. I would like to say it out loud though. I feel like whenever I broach anything close to the topic with white people, or people who are more "desirable" - they tend to fall back on sayings like attraction is just attraction, you can't control it etc. But the truth is, the white hegemony absolutely controls and influences how POC of color are perceived as unattractive.

My friend only dates white guys, and the amount of stories she has about finding out they were married/had gfs and she was the side, could fill a novel. She also likes a particular brand of white men and it’s what kills me. As a Latina, being seen as a sexual object is the bane of our existence and that’s why I cannot date a man that has a history of ONLY dating one race that isn’t their own.

I've realised more and more how that goes both ways. My POC girlfriends date white guys because they won't admit that they're chasing this weird white ideal they grew up with. I have white male friends who specifically only date Asian girls, or Indian girls, or like Latina girls. Or white Asian mixes etc. It's so fucking gross. Like stop objectifying us into our races! You should find a range of people attractive, not Justine particular fetish. I'm not even Latina but guys think I am, or just a general 'exotic brown thing' so I'm always sexual. I literally dress in baggy clothes, pull my hair up, don't wear makeup to make myself as unsexual as possible. It fucking sucks.

Oooh absolutely and I’m glad you said it because I think that’s exactly what is going on here in this situation. The whole concept of marrying white means marrying up is trash.

YES. I will say, the way Harvey Weinstein denounced Lupita Nyong'o and Salma Hayek speaking out against his abusive behavior really highlighted how WOC have unique barriers to being believed as victims of assault and abuse.
