I feel like Russell T. Davies once said that he'd intentionally drop a handful of potential plot threads around various episodes and then decide later which ones to pick up so everything always looked flawlessly planned.
The Dawn stuff is interesting, though, because at the time I assumed they had just thrown her in to try to win back a younger audience.
RTD facing numerous plot holes left, right and centre is still a better shout than Weed-On. Which, as someone who's screamed into the RTD void plenty of times over the last 15 years, ought to say something about Whedon being a useless shite.
I think the main thing is that RTD knows how to stick the landing, regardless of how many things go unresolved. Also nearly everything he's written since has been great, whereas Whedon made three movies of varying quality.
I feel like RTD actually read his criticism, mayhap had a bit of a private fit, and then worked to improve his work.
Meanwhile Whedon reads one thing and goes "The people have deemed me a feminist. A feminist I shall remain." without putting in the work like an absolute fucking wanker.
I feel like I vaguely remember the original plan was to make Xander gay (not Willow) which was why they had him interact with the school bully who later turned out to be gay.
I do remember interviews saying that plans would often change so I wonder how many times there were hints that went nowhere because the plot never happened.
Great post OP! I definitely remember reading that it was between Xander and Willow and the joke was Whedon tossed a coin? (To which I'm like, 'gays move in herds, make them both gay' but w/e).
